During the summer months when I was a young boy, between about 1954 and 1960, the Girl Scouts would walk in long lines of two's and three's from Woodhaven to the Store & Post Office at the junction of Highway 35 & 84 past my home. They were mostly young, with some older group leaders interspersed every 10-20 Girl Scouts. The lines varied in count from 20-30 to over 100 Scouts. Their coming was telegraphed about a half a mile in either direction, as they often sang as they walked. Most of these hikes took place in the afternoon, but some were in the morning. It was about a 4 mile walk, round trip.

It is indicative of a gentler and more sedate time here. It would be hard to envision a 500' long string of Girl Scouts trying to walk up Highway 84 daily now, dodging 80 mph motorcyclists, bicyclists, tourists, and sports car enthusiasts while singing. And sadly, it's hard to picture any child's parents allowing children to walk 84.

The caretaker and maintenance man for the camp for as long as I can recall was gentleman by the name of Barney Volpert. He drove a WW2 jeep with the windshield down, and if memory serves, was a WW2 vet himself.

My brother, who was 3 years older and I made regular forays into the forbidden Girl Scout Camp, mostly for fishing purposes but sometimes just to go where we weren't supposed to be. A large part of the danger was being caught by Barney.
He finally caught us fishing in the creek one day and ruined the whole thing. He turned out to be a very nice guy.

I was a camper at Woodhaven GS Camp starting at the age of 7 in 1945--I was one of two "Brownies" in the camp that year, the rest of the campers all being full fledged girl scouts. I attended camp there for 10 consecutive years and eventually became a counselor myself in 1960. There were 8 units in the camp starting with the "Yearlings" (the youngest) and ending with the teenage "BobCats". Each unit probably had 20 campers and the sessions were of 2 week duration. Barney was there as long as I can remember and lived in a separate house on the site with his wife. He usually had the help of a teenage boy to assist with maintenance items. Camp headquarters was the old lodge--redwood shingle sided and all timber interior with a huge stone fireplace. We ate breakfast and supper on the open air porch. I have many very fond memoires of camping at Woodhaven and with time may be able to track down camp pictures I took with my trusty Kodak Brownie "Hawkeye" camera.
