"Photographer Brooke Tankle of La Honda has only to step outside her front door to photograph nature’s beauty.
“Living here 17 years in a hand-built cabin under a redwood tree, I can watch the seasons bring new visual experiences all year. I have become attuned to the subtleties of light and shadow with details influenced by the environment,” Tankle said.
The artist has produced a line of greeting cards with scenes of San Mateo County, including the Pulgas Water Temple, old Woodside Store, Montara and Pigeon Point lighthouses, beaches, coastlines and Stanford University. All cards are hand-printed in her dark room and signed.
“These cards are timeless, and many people purchase them as keepsakes to be framed,” Tankle said.
“For 40 years, the magic of creating images and the process of developing and printing has never ceased to fascinate me. I am devoted to black-and-white imagery because I think it gives me the opportunity to see a deeper meaning in the play of light upon the ‘ordinary’ world around us. It takes us there by its very nature,” Tankle said.
Cards are available at Kepler’s Bookstore, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, and the San Mateo Historical Museum, 777 Hamilton St., Redwood City."
