The weather couldn't have been more beautiful for Coastal Cleanup Day last Saturday. Fifty-five (55) volunteers showed up at San Gregorio and Pomponio State Beaches to help clean the beach areas and parking lots. More than 150 lbs of trash and recyclables were picked up and fewer than 15 bags were used in the process. The focus this year was on bringing your own buckets, gloves etc. to reduce trash generated by the cleanup effort.
The most peculiar item found was a perfectly good hammer, which the volunteer opted to keep and reuse. The most commonly found items were cigarette butts, food wrappers and food containers. Far fewer cans and bottles were found, but the quantity of small pieces of styrofoam and tobacco products is quite alarming. These are the bits than can be very harmful to birds and other wildlife.
Beach cleanup is a fun and rewarding event. Many participants return each year and look forward to spending time at our beautiful beaches and having an impact on our environment. Huge thanks to all the volunteers!!
