If you have seen any music in the La Honda area over the last ten years you might already be aware of this months Face of Local Music candidate Larry Weissenborn. Larry is one of those special musical talents that puts him in demand by several Bay Area bands. Larry plays most styles of music both acoustically as well as plugged in and electric. Larry first started playing with friends in high school but they already had three guitar players so Larry tried drums then decided bass might be the way to go. Larry comments that if it wasn't for music he probably would have lost touch with those friends a long time ago but as it is he gets together and jams with them whenever he visits southern California. He grew up during the British rock invasion and still feels that "first wave" still influences what he plays today. Larry worked at a computer game company near Yosemite and then made the move to the Bay Area for better pay and opportunities.
Larry plays in several local area bands as well as a couple of bands from the greater Bay Area. Locally Larry plays with the Lisa Kelly Band, Mark Reid Band, The Day Late Fools, The Undergods and he played for several years with local band Foggy Mountain Jam. The Mighty Avalanche Choir and Wires and Wood are two bands from the South Bay. With The Mighty Avalanche Choir Larry has played the Strawberry Music Festival main stage. He gigs most regularly with the Day Late Fools. The Fools will be playing April 1st at Sullivans. March 12th he will be at the San Gregorio General Store with the Undergods featuring Bob Kolb and Pete Pierce. The Mighty Avalanche Choir will be at Don Quixotes in Felton on April 17th.
What makes Larry the musician he is? His willingness to embrace most any style is the key. He went to the Strawberry Music Festival in '83 and someone placed an upright acoustic bass in his hands. It took awhile but now Larry is known throughout the Bay Area as a Bluegrass bass player. However, the rest of us know that it really comes down to the Hendrix influence along with all that early British Rock N Roll that makes us love playing with Larry. Larry plays some guitar and drums too. He has an excellent ear as well as great arranging skills. When asked where he likes most to play locally he talks about the La Honda Fair in the La Honda Gardens and the events held at Playbowl in July and October. Larry is currently working on recording projects with The Lisa Kelly Band and his Bluegrass band Wires and Wood. Hopefully we will see these projects made available this year.
Catch Larry live at the local music spots and as some of us know you can always catch him at a campsite jam at Strawberry where Larry is known to jam till the sun comes up.
