Jeff drumming at 2012 La Honda fair
by craig eddy
I had heard for several years of a mystery drummer in La Honda. He was supposed to be a great drummer but didn't really play with anyone anymore. All I knew was his name was Jeff. I was down at the La Honda Market one morning having coffee with the "crew" and one of the regulars mentioned he was sad to have to put his drumset into storage. Turns out I had been hanging with the mystery drummer for quite awhile and never knew it. Jeff came to La Honda around 17 years ago when a friend was looking for someone to rent his place in town. Jeff started playing drums at 13 years old when a member of his family's church offered to teach him. He learned to play all kinds of styles which is why I was unable to pin him down as to his favorite genre. "I love it all, Marching music to Gospel". Mostly he spent his time playing Rock music though. Jeff spent time in the Coast Guard before finding his way to La Honda. For awhile he played with friends Bill, Andy, and Rhode in The Busted Blues Band. Jeff has done a lot of sitting in with the local bands when they need a substitute drummer. Currently he plays with Saxyman and T and Co. when they need a drummer. One of his favorite gigs was an event at the Tichenor Ranch drumming for David Elias and Gary Gates. These days Jeff has signed on with Jack Mullins and the Hitchhikers. The new band is still in the getting it together stage. They have played a few times most recently the 2012 La Honda Fair. Jeff enjoys the somewhat casual local music scene. Applejack's, Cafe Cuesta, and the La Honda Fair are the kinda of fun gigs he likes the most. We certainly have lots of local musical talent in our area and even though most of them aren't drummers, we are blessed to have a handful of excellent drummers. Hopefully we'll see more of Jeff out and about keeping the beat for the local scene.
