As I slid out of my truck, the San Gregorio Fog was just starting to recede. The telephone wires were covered with Starlings and more were landing by the minute. Their song was about all anyone could hear. As sweet as their chorus was it was nothing compared to what was happening inside the General Store. The two o’clock Sunday show featured the Remnants. They are the remaining members of the John Harvard Band and they have kept the band going after the passing of John. La Honda Allstars?? They sure could be called that. Fronted by Bundy Browne on guitar, the band also features Neil Panton on keyboards, Gary McArthur on sax and flute, Charlie Nadski on bass, and keeping things chugging along was Ken Owens on drums with Reid Dennis covering the percussion. The San Gregorio Store has been doing the weekend music thing for years now and this last Sunday the band played at a perfect volume with an incredible mix. I hear they were recording so I hope to hear some of it. When all the elements come together (quality music, perfect volume, beautiful weather, and a room of appreciative listeners) the SG Store is hard to beat for a day trip. The band members were all smiling and laughing making it clear they were having a blast. From Stevie Wonder to the Grateful Dead and everything in-between, you never know what you’re gonna hear from these guys. They did a great version of Jack Straw that had everyone commenting. Here’s hoping that the Remnants keep it going for many more years and if they continue to have fun like Sunday I don’t expect them to stop anytime soon. You can catch all the Remnants in their other bands throughout the year. This includes Bundy with his Expresso Rhthym Section, Reid with the Mark Reid Band, Neil with the International Head Band, Charlie with the Gary Gates Band, Gary with Pel and the Pelicans and Ken with Jazzist Randy Craig and Rock a Billy band Jinx Jones plus many more. You can check out the San Gregorio General Store music calendar online and I’m sure you’ll find a band or two on the schedule that you’d enjoy so pick one, mark your calendar and we’ll see at the Store! Please excuse the slight blurriness in the photo, the guys wouldn't (or couldn't) hold still!!
