My wife Laurie and I left sunny La Honda last Sunday and headed to Pescadero. The sun didn’t follow us. When we got to the Pescadero Country Store it was chilly and gray. The Deke Rivers Band was about to start playing so we hung out a bit. Deke tells me the gigs there can be damp and cold sometimes but sometimes you get lucky. Once a tour bus full of Japanese tourists stopped and they had to pose for photos with each tourist and they got lots of tips from them.  Maybe a kick-back to the tour bus company to make sure that happens every weekend? The best moment was when a little two year old boy kept trying to steal the tip jar. Well, it was hand painted very nicely and it lights up too. I don’t think he was after the money. Along with Deke was Bill Keaney on drums and Brad Melvine on bass. They do a wide variety of rock such as Stones and Dire Straights as well as some Americana and Country songs. They are from San Francisco and you can tell talking with Deke he fell in love with the music as he was growing up in the City in the 60’s. His desire to play music was born when he watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Says it hit him like lightning and he has been chasing the dream of being a professional musician ever since. His first gig was a summer school show. “We sucked but I caught the bug that day.” He lives to play for a crowd. Over the years Deke has done many shows at the Filmore Lounge. His band would play during the breaks of bands like Steve Miller, Tom Petty, Los Lobos Crosby Stills & Nash and many more. Deke loves playing in this area because of the great local venues. He will be playing at Alice’s on June 12 and will be doing a tweener on June 14^th Saturday afternoon at the La Honda Fair. Ever find yourself wondering what to do on a lazy La Honda weekend? Stay on the sane side of the hill and head to Pescadero or San Gregorio and stop in at one of the “Stores”. Great drive, Great music, and sometimes the fog actually burns off! La Honda Fair is just around the corner!
