It was a dark and stormy night, uhh, well not really. It was a mild and sunny morning. I headed west from La Honda and stopped to see Jack and the Hitchhikers at the San Gregorio General Store. If you have never checked it out, owner George has four bands every weekend. Jack and company were doing the Saturday 11am set so it started out a bit slow but as usual the people start drifting in and by the time the 2pm band starts there was a pretty good crowd. I think it is safe to say that Jack and band are the most prepared band in the area. They rehearse way more than they gig and are always adding new material. Just in the last two weeks Peter Giordano has started rehearsing with them and with his incredible guitar work as well as being an awesome Latin percussionist there is no telling where this new twist will lead them. Dave Bartz, Andy Williams, Jeff Smith, Michael Harrington with Jack Mullins and now potentially Peter I think it is safe to say they are the complete package. Jack is a prolific songwriter and the cover tunes they do aren’t the usual run of the mill. With all the work the band has put in over the last couple years I hope they start gigging further out throughout the bay area. Jack has a CD out that represents where he was at several years ago so I hope with the newer band mates and so much new material he gets into the recording studio soon. Oh, did I mention Jack is a recording and video guy too. His passion is compiling lot’s of lost Elvis film into a documentary. The Hitchhikers will be back at the General Store on March 1st. The store is always a great time. Just browsing the Tee shirt shelves is worth about 15 minutes of laughing. Thanks again to George for supporting the local musicians and also good luck to Jack and the Hitchhikers as in my opinion they are ready to take on the rest of the bay area and beyond.
