Saxyman is back!!!

The last weekend of July looked like perfect weather for a new music festival in our area. The folks at the Venture Retreat Center threw their hat in the musical ring. I only found out about the retreat center last year but am impressed by the facility as well as their desire to add music to the many kinds of events they host. Corporate events, weddings, etc. are their main focus but what a beautiful place to gather for a weekend of music and poetry. There was a long list of the local area bands and many folks camped out over the two nights and had acoustic jams around the nighttime fire. It was a pleasure to see Saxyman and the Lads back on stage! Saxyman has been out of the loop for 7 years but now, Saxyman is back! The event could have been better attended and hopefully they will build on what they achieved this year. The site was set up wonderfully, the food was fresh made in their kitchen and the kids had a blast in the hot tub and large pool. Thanks to all the folks at the Venture Center and all the volunteers that helped out. The event was a fundraiser for the Center’s scholarship fund. Hopefully next year will be even better!!

Crossing Indiana with Jane

Crossing Indiana with Jane as she Goes AWOL (American Walk of Life)

Meeting Jane near the Cincinnati Airport began a week long journey across the state of Indiana. Jane has a variety of friends and family members who are meeting her in a different state each week supporting her by driving the RV or hiking or biking with her from Delaware to San Francisco and on to La Honda. Since I researched Indiana, selected the path and made the campground reservations, I decided to cycle Indiana with Jane.

Hiking and biking on the Cardinal Greenway kept us on a beautiful, flat trail with green bushes and trees on each side providing a little shade. It is also a habitat for the cardinal (yes, the beautiful red bird) flying across the path from tree to tree in front of us. Such beauty to behold!

Jane talks with everyone along the path, at the campground, the grocery store and laundry mat. Her goal is to inspire, motivate and encourage older people to keep on moving and younger people to start to move and live their dreams. She lets each child select an AWOL pencil with an inspiring message and some special adults receive an AWOL t-shirt. Jane’s energy, excitement and enthusiasm for life are contagious and exude out of her 24/7! She immediately connects with people and interviews them, videoing it all and posts it on Facebook (JanesGoneAWOL) and/or her YouTube channel (Janes Gone AWOL). What an education to hear what people think and feel across America!

Did we encounter any hardships? Well, the heat and humidity, which were both in the 90’s caused us to rise early and cycle just as the morning light appeared. The first night we had no RV air conditioning so we stayed in a hotel and had it fixed the next day. Did you know that Indiana has large mosquitos? I brought my healthy insect repellent, but soon switched to Jane’s with deet. We survived it all and had a grand time doing it!

Jane is currently crossing Nebraska. Be sure to welcome her home to La Honda on August 31!

The Homecoming

August 31st marks the return of Jane Sullivan from her American Walk of Life. A parade and party has been organized to celebrate her homecoming. There will be many stories to tell of her adventures of crossing 12 states in three months. There was heat, there was flooding, there were RV repairs, there were bugs... Not only will Jane have accomplished this journey, but so will the many people who supported her, including her husband Tim, family members, and twenty or more friends and community members who planned or accompanied her on this trip.

The parade will begin at approx. 11:15am on Saturday, August 31st at the top of Sears Ranch Rd. above the school. Costumes, banners, instruments and noise makers are encouraged! Since parking is limited at the Open Space parking lot, it's recommended that you park somewhere in La Honda and walk to the site. It's only about a half mile, but uphill - should take less than fifteen or twenty minutes. We will walk back down Sears Ranch Rd. when Jane and company arrive to Playbowl for a short party and reception. There will be beverages and ice cream, but please feel free to bring finger food or snacks to share. For those who wish to hike more, you can walk in Harrington Creek Trail a mile on the flat, or continue left down the trail to Harrington Creek bridge. Jane will be coming in from the north on the other side of the bridge.

The party will continue at the San Gregorio Store after 2pm where Bundy Browne will be playing with his band and special guests. Guests may include Neil Panton, Rob Christian, and quite likely an appearance by the La Hondettes! This should be a fun day for all.

For anyone interested in walking across the Golden Gate Bridge the day before, Jane will be leaving Sausalito Friday, August 30th to cross the bridge and walk to the Great Highway to dip her toes in the Pacific. Specific times have not been set, but word can get out through the La Honda Group online. Walking usually begins fairly early in the morning. You'll need to figure your own transportation, but may be able to leave your car in SF and utilize Uber or Lyft, or maybe the ferry.

Beach Cleanup July 13th in San Gregorio

Join us for beach cleanup at San Gregorio State Beach Saturday, July 13th from 9-11am. Bring your own bucket and gloves, or we can provide if you prefer. Dressing in layers is recommended, and bring sturdy shoes or rubber boots. Everyone who participates in this event leaves with a big smile on their face. It's great for young and old. Parking is free for all volunteers. Help keep our beach beautiful!!
